Sarcastic comments on Islamic parties by Bangladesh Chief Election Commissioner protested.
The Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh on Monday evening strongly protested against the chief election commissioner's sarcastic remark on Jamaat and Islami Oikya Jote and urged him to consider whether such remarks are suitable for a man holding such an important constitutional post.
‘Such sarcastic and funny remarks are not only unsuitable but also indecent for a man holding as important a constitutional post as that of the chief election commissioner,' said the acting secretary-general of Jamaat, Muhammad Quamaruzzaman, in a statement issued on Monday evening.
Talking to journalists CEC ATM Shamsul Huda ridiculed the Jamaat and IOJ saying ‘during the 3rd round of dialogue with them, a situation arose where I was dumbfounded and was thinking to myself, O Allah, the Compassionate, what I am hearing from the huzurs during this holy month of Ramadan!'
He ridiculed because the Jamaat and IOJ had rejected electoral law reforms.
The CEC claimed that the Jamaat and IOJ, during the third round of dialogues, had rejected all reforms to the electoral laws including the proposals they had agreed upon in the first two rounds of discussions with the Election Commission.
Jamaat's statement said that the Jamaat had clearly asked the EC, during the first two rounds of talks, to make the registration process easier to help all the political parties to contest the polls since the matter is new.
But the Election Commission prepared registration rules and regulations incorporating many tough terms and conditions, ignoring our advice, the Jamaat statement said.
Quamaruzzaman in the statement noted, they raised their voice during the third-round dialogue with the commission that the registration would not be possible for any political party during the timeframe.
‘Under the circumstances, we think that there is no need of any mandatory rules for the registration of political parties to participate in the elections, the statement reads, adding that Jamaat did never oppose in principle the registration of political parties.
The CEC has previously took steps to divide BNP, one of the largest political party of the country, and later apologized for his actions.

The historical background, geographical location and the spirit of Islam have altogether given a unique characteristics to the Muslims of Bangladesh. They are extremely peace loving and liberal, at the same time they show excellent examples of heroism and uprightness. While the neighboring India has been experiencing the world's worst communal riots over the last half a century, Bangladesh has been maintaining a very high standard of communal harmony and social justice. At the moment when suicide bombing is directing the future of Muslims of many parts of the world, the Islamic religious and political leaders of Bangladesh have devoted themselves in the socioeconomic development of the country. Bangladeshis are one of the World's bravest and most patriotic nations of the world. No power in the World could destroy our quest for freedom. This is why, the nation enjoys an enviable democracy inspite of her poor economic condition. Certainly, Islam, along with the history and geographic location have contributed to the development of today's Bangladesh.
Geographically, people of this part of the world are peace loving. The pleasant weather has made people introvert, philanthropic and lover of music and poetry. The land has produced many more poets, philosophers and artists than warlords. In fact, the people of this region never took arms in their hands unless it was required to defend their own lives and freedom.
Islam has made the peace loving people a brave and philanthropic community. Before Islam, the people of this region were chained in the caste system of Hinduism. Only few people of the upper caste used to treat the mass as subhuman animals. The people of the upper caste used to ablush in case a shadow of a lower-caste member fell upon him/her. This is only an example. The hermits and saints came with the light of Islam in their hands. The longing for a peaceful life with social justice has been the driving force of Bangladesh journey towards a true welfare society. |
